Nofima participating in shrimp shell sources biodegradable food packaging project

In Finland, Nofima scientists are participating in a two year, NOK 1 million project to use shrimp shells in biodegradable packaging. The project is being coordinated by Italy-based Mavi, and involves three research centers and four companies.

The article at Nofima quotes Morten Sivertsvik, Director of Research at Nofima’s department for Processing Technology in Stavanger, as stating, “Our job is to ensure food contact safety in the project and quantify the effect on bacteria. Chitosan used as an integrated part of the packaging can have an antibacterial effect on the food products.” The endeavor is an European Union project.
