Brazil to Vote on Reopening Amazon to Sugarcane Producers

In Brazil, the national congress will vote in the coming weeks on a bill to reopen large areas of the Amazon to sugar cane producers, which was banned in 2009. Senators from the region who support the bill claim it will help curb illegal deforestation and create jobs. If the bill passes, environmentalists fear increased pressure on land use for nearly a third of the Amazon region.
