Jamaican government teaming with mining company on biofuels project

July 15, 2013 |

In Jamaica, the Government is collaborating on a project with Noranda Jamaica Bauxite Partners, to demonstrate the viability of the biofuels industry, using mined out bauxite lands to grow oil-producing crops.

Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Hon. Phillip Paulwell, says the objective is to extract the oils from seeds, such as castor and palm, for the emerging biofuels market in Jamaica.

The collaboration, which also involves the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ), and the Scientific Research Council (SRC), is part of the government’s strategy to seek out renewable energy sources, the Minister explained.
