Darling to purchase Maple Leaf Foods biodiesel for $613M

In Canada, Darling Inc will buy Maple Leaf Foods’ rendering and biodiesel business for $613M in cash. The business includes six rendering plants across Canada, and a biodiesel facility in Quebec, and is “hugely profitable,” claims Octagon Capital analyst Robert Gibson. After Maple Leaf recorded a surprising second-quarter loss on July 31, due in part to the high prices of corn and wheat which lowered the margins on luncheon meat production, the company needed to pay down their debt, leading them to negotiate the deal.
