US ethanol could head overseas if smaller RFS mandate cuts demand

November 21, 2013 |

In Texas, ethanol could be exported if demand falls under a smaller RFS mandate next year. Ethanol production based on the current corn harvest is pegged at 14 billion gallons but the 2014 RFS only calls for 13 billion gallons of corn-based ethanol. In 2011, 1.2 billion gallons of ethanol was exported but only half that is expected for 2013. So boosting exports is doable, if the international market proves favorable. ADM says that Brazil, Canada and even Europe could provide opportunities for additional exports.
