Choose greener roadside assistance, says 20/20 Project, over pro-Big Oil, anti-green AAA

November 28, 2013 |

In Massachusetts, the 2020 Project, a not-for-profit public education group, launched a public awareness campaign today against the American Automobile Association (AAA). The objective of the effort – called AAA Truth – is to expose AAA’s ongoing  alignment with Big Oil and educate motorists about better performing alternatives to AAA for roadside assistance.

“Consumers seem to be unaware that AAA carries water for Big Oil and has a long history of opposing landmark clean energy, environmental and public health policies at both the state and federal level,” said Andrew Schuyler, spokesman for the 2020 Project.
The group says it will rely on a combination of traditional outreach and online strategies to educate consumers about AAA’s opposition to developing alternatives to foreign oil, clean air policies and even the development of bike paths. The group’s website provides links to a number of AAA position papers and letters that often go unnoticed by the general public.

“AAA has a split personality. There is plenty of fluff on the AAA website about their appreciation for clean air and water, but when the rubber meets the road it’s all about protecting the rights of oil companies to do whatever they want to do,” said Schuyler.
The group has conducted preliminary outreach and believes that both existing and prospective AAA members will sign up with a greener roadside assistance company if the services and price are comparable, and the process is straight forward. While not affiliated with the Better World Club (BWC), the group’s website directs the public to BWC with a 15 percent membership discount and a complete waiver of the sign-up fee if transferring membership from AAA.

“What seems to keep motorists engaged with AAA is their false belief that it’s the only game in town for reliable roadside assistance,” added Schuyler. “We decided to direct people to the Better World Club because they do everything AAA does for the same price, but without the dirty agenda,” he said.
