German Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein plants advocates for 7% iLUC base quantity in Europe

January 12, 2015 |

In Germany, the European biofuel economy should develop on the basis of a 7% “iLUC” base quantity, according to Wolfgang Vogel, the chairman of the Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein Plants. Vogel wrote to the members of the European parliament committees responsible for the European biofuel policy, stating that the security of biofuels industry inventories after 2020 needs to be addressed now.

In the letter, Vogel explains the position of the UFOP regarding the “iLUC question”. The sustainability certification is reaching its limits with regards to illegal overexploitation of the natural environment. With iLUC factors, the European agricultural and biofuel economies would be penalized as would all companies that comply with the certification criteria in third countries. “iLUC factors” do not save a hectare of rain forest,” Vogel emphasizes. he introduction of iLUC factors would, moreover, trigger a counter-productive displacement and deflection effect.
