EIA says non-petroleum fuel use hit highest since 1954 last year at 8.5%

In Washington, the Energy Information Agency says the mixture of non-petroleum fuels reached the highest since 1954 last year at 8.5%. Non-petroleum fuels were at a steady 4% for about 50 years but began rising in the 2000s. Growth in ethanol consumption was the highest among all of the alternative fuels, growing by about a quadrillion BTUs annually from 2000 to 2014. Using natural gas in transport also grew significantly to 946 trillion BTUs while biodiesel grew to 180 trillion BTUs in 2014.
