Avril opens 100,000 ton biodiesel facility on the Med but worried about Total

October 28, 2015 |

In France, Avril has opened a 100,000 metric ton biodiesel production facility in Sete, helping to bring total production capacity to 1.7 million tons. The company mothballed two northern facilities in 2013 after the government retrenched on raising the biodiesel blend beyond the then-7%, but it inched the blend higher by 1% late last year. The northern plants face stiff competition from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany but in the Mediterranean there is little installed capacity for now, until Total brings on its 500,000 ton per year biodiesel facility by 2017 that will use cheaper imported palm oil rather than local rapeseed.
