New wild bee research blames biofuels for destroying bee habitat

December 24, 2015 |

In Vermont, researchers led by the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics at the University of Vermont in Burlington have released a study looking at wild bee populations across the United States, which they say are in decline in part due to increased demand for biofuel that has boosted corn production—a crop known to be poor bee habitat. The study looks at changes in land use between 2008 and 2013 and overlays them with changes in the wild bee population, showing a 23% decline during the period.
