The 50 Hottest Companies in the Advanced Bioeconomy 2016

MIAMI, FL – Amyris took the #1 spot in the 2016 “50 Hottest Companies in the Advanced Bioeconomy” rankings, published today in The Digest, the world’s most widely-read advanced bioeconomy daily. Amyris last took the #1 ranking in 2010.

LanzaTech (#2), Novozymes (#3), Renewable Energy Group (#4), Solazyme(#5), DuPont Industrial Biosciences (#6), Genomatica (#7), DSM (#8), BASF (#9), and BioAmber (#10), rounded out the top 10.

Ranked #11 through #20 are POET-DSM, POET, Beta Renewables, Cargill, Enerkem, Elevance Renewable Sciences, Verdezyne, Gevo, Avantium, and Algenol.

A record number of new companies

With a shift in global oil prices, mergers and significant progress towards commercial-scale by many companies, a record 16 companies reached the Hot 50 for the first time in 2016. They are:

Genomatica (#7), BioAmber (#10), Verdezyne (#17), Avantium (#18), NatureWorks (#29), Stora Enso Biomaterials (#33), Rivertop Renewables (#34), Reverdia (#35), Coca-Cola (#37), POET Biomass (#39), Braskem (#40), Evolva (#42), Corbion (#47), Evonik (#49), and Liquid Light (#50).

Companies around the world

Overall, 29 companies founded in the US were recognized in the rankings, and 21 founded in other countries including Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom made the list.

 

The rankings, which recognize innovation and achievement in fuels, biobased chemicals and materials are based 50 percent on votes from an invited panel of distinguished international selectors, and 50 percent on votes from subscribers of The Digest.

Overall, more than 100,000 individual company ratings were received from panelists and voters in the annual Hot 40 and Hot 50 rankings. The Hot 40 recognizes smaller, emerging companies.

The Miami, FL-based Digest serves more than 1,960,000 unique readers and followers via the web, newsletters, social media and broadcast in every UN-recognized country. The rankings have been conducted annually since 2008.
