In France, a hybrid airplane set to run on algae-based biofuels and solar power is set to make its debut flight from Paris to New York in June, making it the first ever carbon-free flight across the Atlantic ocean. About 20% of the power comes just from gliding, while solar will power the plane during daylight hours. In the darkness the algae-powered engine kicks in to keep the plane flying, roughly 55% of the actual fly time during the estimated 60-hour trip at just 10,000 feet.
