European rapeseed crop damaged by insects and frost but Germany seen better off

May 4, 2016 |

In Germany, Europe’s rapeseed crop has been hit by insect damage in France and Britain along with frost damage to Poland’s crop, cutting production to 21.2 and 21.4 million tons from 22 million tons last year, which could provoke import demand from Ukraine, Australia and Canada. Poland’s crop is seen down 22%, the UK’s down 10%, and France down 100,000 tons from the 5.4 million ton estimate. Germany’s crop is expected to be 0.6% higher than last year, bucking the trend among other major European producers.
