Expert panel gives thumbs up to Taurus Energy’s XyloFerm

May 29, 2016 |

In Sweden, an expert panel convened by Taurus Energy has issued a favorable opinion regarding XyloFerm®as a feed component. It remains for the panel to assess and issue a statement regarding the final feed product. The panel members have, individually and collectively, determined that the genetic modifications made to create XyloFerm strains do not form the basis for departing from the safety assessment and the risk profile of non-modified wildtype yeast, whose safety is well documented in the public literature.

Following that the XyloFerm strains evaluated by the panel are GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe), i.e. safe to consume, as a component in animal feed in the form of inactivated biomass under 21 C.F.R. (Code of Federal Regulations) § 570.30 (b), based on the scientific procedure.

The panel intends to make a separate assessment of the final feed product safety and has requested additional data in the form of a comparative study of the feed product DG (Distillers Grains) produced by XyloFerm compared to unmodified yeast. Taurus Energy is now initiating collaboration with an ethanol producer to produce this data.
