Biofuel distribution center set for Atlanta coming up against dark past

June 7, 2016 |

In Georgia, an energy company is trying to set up a biofuel distribution center in Atlanta but the lot it is trying to use is home to a former brickmaking facility notorious for its treatment of black convicts basically sold into slavery after the Emancipation Proclamation. The site of the former Chattahoochee Brick Company has gained fame in books and a PBS special, and was known as a death camp where hundreds of convicts were beaten monthly, given moldy food and insect-ridden housing. A local NGO wants the site preserved and conserved, especially considering the likelihood that many of the convicts are buried at the site, and turned into a family-friendly park.
