Navy getting hit in the press for filling up with expensive palm oil biofuel in Italy

July 7, 2016 |

In Washington, the Navy is getting hit hard in the press for filling up part of its Green Fleet in Italy with a 5.5% palm oil marine diesel blend that allegedly cost $13.64 per gallon for the biofuel fraction. When announced in 2012, the Green Fleet was meant to run on 50% algae biofuel but the costs were too high at double that price. Then biodiesel produced from beef tallow was blended at 10% earlier in the year, but blends have since fallen, provoking more criticism.
