India aims for zero petroleum imports with expanded alternative fuels plan

In India, a focus on domestically-produced alternative fuels from ethanol to methanol and bio-CNG, the country is working to become a zero petroleum import economy. Thanks to low oil prices, the country import bill has fallen by nearly half but still remains $678 million annually. Speaking at a methanol economy conference, the transport minister said the roadmap to achieving zero petroleum imports will create jobs by strengthening the agricultural and rural economies. In his comments, he spoke specifically about the opportunities of ethanol from agricultural waste and MSW.
