Chemoil to pay record $27 million fine and retire 72.7 million RINs for biodiesel exports

October 3, 2016 |

In California, Chemoil must pay a record $27 million fine and retire $71 million worth of RINs for alleged violations of the Renewable Fuel Standard. Between 2011 and 2013, the company exported more than 48.5 million gallons of biodiesel but didn’t retire the associated 72.7 million RINs. During the same years, the company failed to report its Renewable Volume Obligations for biomass-based diesel. The Department of Justice and the Environmental Protection Agency estimate that about 305,579 metric tons of CO2 were not saved due to the company’s export of the biodiesel rather than blending in the domestic market.
