Norfolk Southern Railroad to pay Ohio county $170,709 for 2012 ethanol spill clean up

October 3, 2016 |

In Ohio, Norfolk Southern Railroad must pay Franklin County $170,709.34 to pay for emergency services and clean up following a rail incident that led to ethanol igniting into a fireball on board when a broken rail caused 16 railroad cars to jump the track in a Columbus neighborhood where the state fair is held in July 2012. Ohio law requires those responsible for hazardous material spills to pay for the services required to protect citizens and clean up the damage. Some people living nearby had to be evacuated from their homes at the time and three bystanders were injured.
