Since 2013, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory has had an Algae Biomass project underway, under the direction of Dr. Phil Pienkos, aimed at “reducing algal biofuel production cost by developing advanced process options for the conversion of algal biomass into biofuels and bioproducts based on the three major biomass components: lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins.
