Irish researchers find biofuels projects boost local food security in Africa

November 21, 2016 |

In Ireland, researchers from the University College Cork have published a paper in the SpringerLink journal, Food Security, saying biofuels produced under the right conditions can have positive food security impacts on developing countries including in Africa. The lack of consistent policy framework in Europe and unclear policy goals in African countries have hampered much investment in biofuels, but results from surveys undertaken in Mozambique and Tanzania where projects were implemented showed improved food security for workers and outgrowers, while many of those not involved with the biofuel projects felt the development improved local prospects.
