Feds rule 2015 South Dakota ethanol derailment caused by broken track

December 12, 2016 |

In South Dakota, the Federal Railroad Administration has determined that a broken rail was the cause for a train derailment in September 2015 where nearly 50,000 gallons of ethanol from Glacial Lake Energy Company’s ethanol plant in Mina were lost en route to a supply company in Texas. The broken rail led to seven BNSF ethanol tanker cars derailing, two of them leaking the fuel that caused more than $1 million in damages. The crew of the train were determined to not be at fault.
