Brazilian ethanol supplies to be short thanks to sugar bringing in $100 more per ton

January 2, 2017 |

In Brazil, sugar mills’ focus on sugar production rather than ethanol during the 2016 crush is expected to support ethanol prices due to a lack of supply. Platts says that since the official start of the crush on April 1 through December 21, sugar produced for export fetched nearly $100 per metric ton more than ex-mill hydrous ethanol, a difference of more than 1,300% from the year prior. As such, hydrous ethanol production fell nearly 11% during the period, while anhydrous ethanol production increased nearly 5%.
