ICAO experts meeting looks at barriers to uptake of aviation biofuels

In Canada, the International Civil Aviation Organization is pushing aviation biofuels as one of four key strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from commercial aviation. Amyris’ technology as well as hydro-treated oils were highlighted at an experts meeting held in Montreal last week as biofuels and solutions like lighter aircraft and optimized flight paths were bounced around. Price competitiveness and ensuring equivalent safety with fossil fuels were highlighted as challenges that still must be overcome for the industry to take up aviation biofuel.
