Mexican biodiesel producer growing thanks to higher fossil prices but margins thin

May 22, 2017 |

In Mexico, Smart Recycling has boosted its UCO biodiesel production 150% since January to more than 400 gallons per day thanks to the national oil company Pemex boosting fuel prices 20% around the same time, leading to nationwide protests. Though fossil fuel prices have returned to close to last year’s prices, demand remains for biodiesel and other alternatives, though feedstock remains a challenge because prices rose in line with fossil fuels, keeping margins tight. Different eating habits in Mexico also mean that UCO isn’t as abundant as in its northerly neighbor.
