UNICA slams EU industry for false subsidy claims

July 6, 2017 |

In Belgium, UNICA is hitting back at ePure and the European sugar industry for wild, invalidated claims of $1.8 billion in subsidies to its sugarcane sector and cross-subsidization of its ethanol industry. In a letter sent to the European institutions, the four associations who have launched the campaign and to the press, UNICA accepts $803,196 worth of low interest loans to the industry that could be viewed as support, but it’s a far cry from the figures the Europeans are using in an attempt to keep Brazil from securing more sugar and ethanol import quotas though EU-Mercosur trade negotiations. Nor does it accept that it cross-subsidizes ethanol production due to the sheer fact that ethanol production is loss-making for mills due to high global sugar prices.
