Raleigh offering free holiday curbside grease collection for biofuel

November 3, 2017 |

In North Carolina, the city of Raleigh has teamed up with Key Energy to collect grease from residents during the upcoming holiday season. They plan on using the used oil for recycling into biofuel to power cars and heat homes in the area. They are collecting any used cooking oil or cooking grease in a sealed, clear, plastic container labeled “used cooking grease” that are placed on the curbside on regular garbage pickup days. The program runs from November 1 through January 15, 2018. The city and Key Energy are hoping this will alleviate sewer overflows caused by improperly disposed of grease by residents that clog up homeowners’ plumbing and the city’s sewer lines, while also helping the environment by reusing it into biofuels.
