In Illinois, a University of Illinois researcher says that California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard as well as the federal Renewable Fuel Standard impose an additional cost of $61 per ton of carbon onto drivers as a result of the methodology used for calculating indirect land use change in an attempt to shift consumption towards advanced biofuels. This additional financial burden on drivers could range between $15 billion and $131 billion nationwide over the next 10 years.
