Biogas fuel exploration launched in Qatar

December 22, 2017 |

In Qatar, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment launched a project to produce biogas from wastes with Qatar University’s College of Engineering with the goal of using that biogas as a clean energy to power the motor vehicles. The project will study various techniques for producing biogas from waste and aims to convert vehicles from diesel to biofuel and compressed gas to utilize the waste from the solid waste management center.

“Phase one project will include a feasibility study for the project. The study will look into various aspects such as storing quantity of biogas from waste and compressing and purifying it. The biofuel would help to reduce the operation cost of vehicles,” Hamad Jassim Al Bahr, Director of Waste Management Department told The Peninsula.

“An experimental study of the project was conducted by powering a vehicle with biogas produced from waste,” Al Bahr told The Peninsula, adding that another financial feasibility study was also conducted on how to invest and buy the units for compressing and management of natural gas and buying the units for converting the vehicles into biofuel.
