Indonesia celebrates WTO ruling on EU duties

January 27, 2018 |

In Switzerland, the World Trade Organization ruled against EU duties on Indonesian biofuels, challenging the anti-dumping duties authorized by the EU’s General Court in 2013 and causing great celebration in Indonesia, the largest producer of palm oil in the world. Jakarta appealed the 2013 rule and this WTO decision is for that appeal. The EU is not planning on appealing the WTO ruling.

According to The New Economy, “while EU authorities argued the anti-dumping duties were introduced to establish a standard value for biofuels, Jakarta felt they represented an illegitimate, protectionist trade ruling. The WTO panel agreed with the latter, ruling the EU should have referenced prices recorded by local producers, and the profit margin calculated in the EU’s standard price was incorrect.”
