In Spain, Enerkem and Suez are teaming up to build a EUR250 million MSW-to-methanol plant near Tarragona called Ecoplanta Molecular Recycling Solutions with an eye on opening by 2022. Using 375,000 metric tons of plastic, paper and textiles annually, the facility will produce 265,000 tons of fuel annually. Only 10% of the region’s waste is currently recycled—ending up either buried or incinerated—but with the project that will boost to 70% thought that could increase to 100% in the future.
