B5 uptake in Shanghai seen as success in getting gutter oil out of the food chain

September 13, 2018 |

In China, already 40 gas stations in Shanghai are offering 5% biodiesel blends using fuel produced from overused used cooking oil known as “gutter oil” in response to the government’s push to get the dirty out of the food chain. Already more than 54 million liters of the fuel has been sold since the program was launched last October. Sinopec expects 200 gas stations in the city will be offering the blend by the end of the year. The city aims to consume 30,000 metric tons of gutter oil annually for biodiesel production.
