US soy could win ILUC fight against palm oil in the EU

January 23, 2019 |

In Belgium, the Bloomberg reports that while palm oil is likely to lose out when the European Commission releases its low ILUC feedstocks list before February 1, US soybeans may step into the focus as a potential replacement due to almost non-existence of ILUC in US feedstocks. The EU already forecasts imports of US soybeans doubling this crop year to 5,182 metric tons compared to 2017/18. All palm oil may not be painted with the same high ILUC brush, however, with Indonesia and Malaysia likely to be branded “high” while Colombia could be branded “low”.
