#4 Croatian brothers carry on family shoe legacy with biodegradable tennis kicks

In Croatia, two brothers have created biodegradable tennis shoes made from hemp, cotton, and other natural materials.

Domagoj and Hrvoje Boljar from Duga Resa founded Miret and operate within the EIT Climate-KIC accelerator dedicated to fostering climate-friendly startups. The inspiration came from the brothers’ late father Josip Joža Boljar, who began producing shoes in the 90s and eventually built a business with more than 100 employees.

“There was no family pressure for us to take over one day,” Domagoj said. “[But w]e inherited [our parents’ need] to create something new, something useful and tangible.”
