Serbian researchers boost microalgae lipid content to 30% using stress methods

August 14, 2019 |

In Serbia, local press reports that after two years of work, researchers from the University of Belgrade’s Institute for Multidisciplinary Research have developed a way to boost lipid content in microalgae to around 30% by stressing the organisms. The increased oil content could have a major impact in the economic viability of algae as a biofuel feedstock. The center is already producing oxygen from microalgae. The research project under the NATO program “Science for Peace and Security”, in cooperation with the University of Manchester and the Baylor University in Texas, is expected to continue for another year.
