Pumpkin spice everything is already appearing in stores across the U.S. and so is beer for Oktoberfest, but Anheuser-Busch’s beer will be delivered using zero-emission hydrogen beer trucks! Have some cheese with that beer as cheese waste is now being converted to biogas in the UK. And for back to school folks, there are backpacks made with algae foam padding as a greener option. Speaking of algae, and green, local microalgae in Bangladesh are helping generate clean water, making algae a wonder to behold in this week’s Top 10 Innovations.

In today’s Digest, the beer, the algae, the cheesy biogas, as well as biodegradable lanterns for festivals, biobased films, new kinds of cellulose bioplastics, bamboo toothbrushes — these and more, ready for you now at The Digest online.

#1 Back to school backpack made with algae foam and recycled bottles

In Canada, eco-friendly apparel and gear company, tentree, developed an eco-friendly backpack that is made from 100% REPREVE recycled polyester (usually recycled plastic water bottles) and BLOOM algae foam padding. BLOOM algae foam is the world’s first plant-based foam that has been formulated with algae biomass, according to tentree. BLOOM foam is made by harvesting the excess algae and transforms them into performance foam. Even the clips and buckles are made from recycled factory waste. The backpacks easily convert from 16L to 35L and are designed in Canada and made in Vietnam.
