UK National Farmers Union net-zero carbon strategy includes BECCS

September 11, 2019 |

In the UK, the National Farmers Union has released its net-zero to 2040 farming strategy which includes a pillar focused on displacing greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels and removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through bioenergy. The NFU says the combining bioenergy with carbon capture and storage on farms could reduce GHG emissions by 22 MtCO2e/year but that in order to do so a clear carbon price and demonstration projects will be required. Using bio-based materials in construction is estimated to save another half million tons of CO2 equivalent annually.
