Airlines bracing for higher fuels costs with Norway’s 0.5% aviation biofuel blending mandate

November 21, 2019 |

In Norway, Reuters reports that airlines believe they will have access to sufficient, although expensive, supplies of aviation biofuel by year’s end in order to comply with the country’s 0.5% blending mandate for airplanes that will come into effect on January 1. Currently, aviation biofuel is about four times the price as conventional jet fuel, although it reduces carbon emissions by up to 80%. For SAS, as an example, fuel for their Norway flights is expected to cost an additional $3 million next year. The Norwegian law forbids the use of palm oil as feedstock.
