50 Hottest Companies in the Advanced Bioeconomy for 2020

December 30, 2019 |

In Florida, the 2020 “50 Hottest Companies in the Advanced Bioeconomy” was published today, as voted by invited international Selectors and subscribers of The Digest, the world’s most widely-read bioeconomy daily.

The Hot 50 winners are expected to join more than 250 other companies in the advanced bioeconomy for the gala Hot 50 Party, celebrating the 2020 honorees, at the Advanced Bioeconomy Leadership Conference at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington DC, on the evening of March 26th, 2020.

The annual rankings recognize innovation and achievement in fuel, chemicals, materials, advanced foods, genetics, advanced biological and process engineering  and integrated biorefinery development, and were first awarded in 2008.

The theme for 2020 was undoubtedly international expansion — half of the Hot 50 this year are based outside of the United States or have significant international operations and plants.

Diversification was on voters minds as well. 19 companies were primarily in fuels. 8 in chemicals & materials,. 7 in bioengineering, 5 in process engineering, 5 in foods and 4 in AgTech.

Fresh faces were also rewarded by voters this year, with a record 19 companies in the Hot 50 in 2020 that did not appear in 2019, including first-time debutants Benson Hill Biosystems, Checkerspot, Crop Enhancement, Inscripta, iWi, Provivi, SkyNRG, and World Energy.

“Engineering companies — biological and process — made big moves this year,” said Digest editor and publisher Jim Lane.”Clearly voters have focused on the process and a robust, low-cost, high-yield organism, and not just an attractive target and a disruptive result on the bench. This year, the companies have become bigger and scale in on everyone’s minds.”
