European industrial ethanol prices soar on back of COVID-19 demand

In the UK, while US ethanol prices fall to record lows, in Europe industrial ethanol prices are skyrocketing as demand surges for hand sanitizers and other disinfectants to tackle the spread of COVID-19. Anyone capable of producing alcohol, from gin distillers to biofuel producers, are switching to industrial alcohol production to fill the significant supply gap. The increased demand and producers’ ability to switch to industrial ethanol is expected to at least partially offset the reduced demand for ethanol for fuel blending as people shelter in place across Europe.
