Eni looks to end palm oil and PFAD use by 2023

May 19, 2020 |

In Italy, the Wall Street Journal reports that Eni has announced it is aiming to phase out its controversial use of palm oil and PFAD by 2023 in a move applauded by environmental groups such as Transport & Energy who have criticized the company. The decision comes as part of a wider review of the company’s supply chain as part of its decarbonization plan. Of the roughly 300,000 metric tons of feedstock used to make renewable fuels in 2019, only 39,000 tons were non-palm feedstocks. The Italian competition authorities fined the company $5.4 million earlier this year for claiming its renewable fuels were green despite the use of palm-based feedstocks.
