Barbados to produce biofuels and biomaterials from troublesome Sargassum seaweed

June 1, 2020 |

In Barbados, the Barbados Advocate newspaper reports that the government has decided to collect Sargassum seaweed to produce biofuel, biomaterials and fertilizers as a way to reduce the negative impacts of the seaweed that has plagued the island since 2018. Lab tests on different products from the seaweed have been underway since 2019. The Ministry of the Blue Economy will team with Barbados National Oil Company Limited on the utilization of the would-be feedstock that has negatively impacted fishing communities throughout the Caribbean.
