Concerns US ambassador to Brazil helping Trump campaign by getting more ethanol quota

August 4, 2020 |

In Washington, the Des Moines Register reports the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and chairman of the House Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Civilian Security and Trade sent a letter to the US ambassador to Brazil over claims in two Brazilian newspapers that the ambassador has been working to help President Trump win Iowa in the next election. The president is struggling in the polls and Iowa is an important win for him, which would be helped if the state’s ethanol industry had increased market access to the Brazilian market, something the Brazilian newspaper reports the ambassador is trying to do. The State Department has denied the claims the ambassador is working on behalf of the president as a candidate.
