Canadian refiners may be too slow to take up LCFS opportunity as US gears up

In Canada, Reuters reports domestic oil refiners are pushing back against plans to decarbonize transportation with the proposed low carbon fuel standard while US refiners who are investing heavily in renewable diesel transitions are looking at opportunities north of the border. Canada’s Suncor Energy had previously announced a project to produce renewable diesel before the global pandemic but those plans have slowed down while Parkland Fuel is production renewable fuels in British Columbia and is looking to expand, while in the US more than half a dozen major oil refiners are going into commercial scale renewable diesel production.
