Edible straw maker lands smoothie franchise

In the US, edible straw maker SORBOS has landed its first restaurant franchise deal. Tropical Smoothie Café will use the straws for a limited time, beginning November 11.  

The 100% flavored and biodegradable plastic straw alternative is made of sugar, water, cornstarch and gelatine and stays rigid for 40 minutes in cold and frozen drinks. Tropical Smoothie Café, which operates 885 locations nationwide, says the straws will be paired with the company’s cranberry smoothies. 

“Our brand is all about sharing flavor and fun, and these straws contribute both to our smoothie experience,” says Alice Crowder, VP of Menu Strategy and Innovation at Tropical Smoothie Cafe, LLC, in a press statement. 

The trial was arranged by Green Nature Marketing, a foodservice broker connecting sustainable food, beverage, and packaging brands with foodservice operators and distributors. Their brand portfolio includes top-tier organic, fair trade, allergy friendly, and plant-based manufacturers.  “SORBOS straws represent an easy way for operators to incorporate something fun and exciting into their product offering, while also enhancing their image by reducing usage of single-use plastics,” says Nick Dionne, Vice President of Green Nature Marketing, explains,
