Encirc receives first biofuel delivery for sustainable glass production trial

December 9, 2020 |

In the UK, Encirc has received its first biofuel delivery for the planned trail to produce sustainable glass at its facility in Derrylin, Northern Ireland during Q1 2021. The trial will be pioneering the use of biofuel on one of its furnaces, hoping to pave the way for an industry-wide reduction in carbon emissions.

Alongside this trial, Encirc will be using up to 96% recycled glass to create the new bottles, further reducing the carbon footprint of its products.

The UK trial will be the world’s first and the results will feed into UK Government policy around decarbonization. The project forms part of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Energy Innovation Program, within which Glass Futures is leading a GBP7.1 million project to help determine the most effective route to switch the glass sector to low carbon fuels.
