Let us strive on to finish the work we are in

A few words on the events in the United States that have taken place on January 6th and since.

We agree with Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, who wrote:

“[The] violent attack on the U.S. Capitol was an attack on American democracy itself. These were un-American acts worthy only of condemnation.

Many have called for impeachment of President Trump. Others say that impeachment and trial would, for reasons of time, be futile as a check on the President, and distract us from our vital work on COVID-19, economic recovery, and industrial transformation. 

We believe an alternative exists. The 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states:

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof…The Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

Congress has the power, by majority vote, to name and proscribe, as insurrectionists, those taking part in invasion of the Capitol, aiming to disrupt or disband a joint session of Congress mandated under the 12th Amendment; or those giving aid and comfort thereto. Under the 14th Amendment’s provisions, such people would be barred from serving in office or Congress.

For those who seek a response to the events of last week, choosing this path allows the nation to more swiftly address our health, economic and industrial priorities; after all, this is the work we, the people, are in. 

As was stated in March 1865 by Abraham Lincoln:

“With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in.”
