South African sugar industry needs ethanol policy to survive

In South Africa, Farmers Weekly reports that producing ethanol could help to revive the national sugar industry which has been hit by foreign imports while 800,000 metric tons annually is exported at a loss. The government has been slow to develop and then implement ethanol blending which could serve as a lifeline for the industry but has been on hold for years. A government official has said the biofuel regulatory framework might be ready later this year, however.
