EU’s ReFuel proposal seen kicking of SAF blending at 2% in 2025 and hitting 63% by 2050

March 17, 2021 |

In Belgium, Euractiv reports that sources close to the European Commission see the ReFuel proposal under development aiming for 63% use of SAF by 2050, increasing every five years from the 2025 kick off of 2%. Failure to meet blending mandates may lead to penalties as part of the policy under development. With SAF production costs still double that of conventional aviation fuel, the aim of the policy is to quickly drive an increase in production capacity that will lower those costs and make it competitive.
