IMO may need to change rules to allow for biofuel expansion

April 15, 2021 |

In the UK, Ship and Bunker reports the International Marine Organization which has set strict requirements for decarbonization of marine fuel for 2030 says changes to the MARPOL Annex IV may need to be changed if the spread of biofuels use is going to continue due to their higher nitrogen emissions compared to fossil fuels. The agency’s Marine Environment Protection Committee is next set to meet in June when UN member states are expected to bring forth proposals to help settle the issue and facilitate wider biofuel use in marine fuel.
